Sticks and Stones
SUMMARY
In the 1970s, curlers smoked during games. Partying was rampant. Curlers weren’t seen as athletes.
Warren Hansen wanted to change that and help make curling an Olympic sport, but change is hard, especially hard in curling.
Sticks and Stones shows how he spearheaded the drive to ban smoking, promote fitness, bring in officials, coaches, uniforms, but he took the heat for tampering with a national pastime:
He thought he was improving the game but many felt he was ruining it.
